Size the rug around your seating

Enter the width and depth of your seating area, not just the room. Compare standard sizes while keeping a border of visible flooring. The preview is a simple plan, not a room rendering.

Leave room to pull out dining chairs

The dining setting adds 24 inches around each side of the table as a starting point. If no standard rug meets that clearance inside your room, the result says so. Measure your actual chairs before buying.

Use the bed dimensions to allow a soft landing at the sides and foot. Switch between inches and centimeters, then download a PNG of the layout to keep with your measurements.

How to use it

  1. 1

    Measure the room and furniture

Enter the clear floor dimensions. For a living room, measure the whole seating zone; for a dining room or bedroom, measure the table or bed.

  2. 2

    Compare the suggested sizes

Choose a room type and flooring border, then calculate. Select an alternative to see how its proportions change. A compromise label means the suggested furniture clearance is not met.

  3. 3

Check the plan in your room

Download the layout and mark its outline on the floor with tape. Check doors, walkways and chair movement before ordering.

Your questions, answered

What size rug do I need for my living room?

Start with your seating group rather than the room alone. This calculator suggests a rug wider than the furniture zone and checks whether it fits within your chosen floor border. Confirm where the sofa and chair legs will sit in person.

How much larger should a dining rug be than the table?

This tool adds 24 inches on every side, or 48 inches to each table dimension. That is a starting point for pulling chairs out. Deep chairs or a generous walkway can need more space.

What happens when no standard rug size fits?

The tool shows a no-fit message or labels the largest fitting alternative as a compromise. It does not silently recommend a rug that crosses your chosen room border.

Can I use centimeters instead of inches?

Yes. Changing units converts the numbers already entered. Standard rug sizes are based on common imperial dimensions, with approximate centimeter equivalents.

Does the rug size calculator measure a room from a photo?

No. You provide the measurements. The diagram is a proportional, rectangular planning aid; it does not account for irregular walls, door swings, rug thickness or furniture movement.

Is it free, and can I download the layout?

Yes. The calculator and PNG download are free and need no account or credits. Calculations run in your browser. AI room redesign is a separate tool with its own credit requirements.
